Slowly, because of its convenient location between Namibia's capital Windhoek
and Etosha, one of Africa's great national parks, and also because of the
abundant birdlife there, Okonjima became involved in tourism. At the same time,
the farm became known as a place for animal welfare and farmers started
contacting the Hanssens to obtain advice and help with their own predator problems.
The need for a foundation that could offer assistance and develop further solutions soon
became clear so, in 1993, the AfriCat Foundation was formally established and the Hanssens
switched completely from cattle farming to tourism.
Today, although the AfriCat Foundation and Okonjima Lodge share Okonjima farm, the two are
separate, but have, in fact, a mutually beneficial relationship."
[The winner of the Silver Otter Award 2002 was a new centre in Nuremberg -Germany, which
documented Nazi propaganda and the large Nazi rallies of the 1930's.
Second Place - Okonjima Bush Camp & The Africat Foundation for their work with Namibia's large
carnivores.
Third place - 'Meet the Danes' A project in Denmark where people take visitors/tourists and introduce them to 'real Danes' the way they live day to day.
