BETH OSMOND for BH

Interview with Becky Hennessy, Volunteering here at PAWS for the FORTH TIME!!! 7th March 2012 Ed: What attracted you to voluntary work when you first came to PAWS in February 2009, six months after the project first opened? BH: I had already been doing voluntary work at home with children and my uncle had just come back from doing voluntary work in South Africa on a lion project. So I looked on the internet and found PAWS through Real Gap. Ed: Why did you first come to PAWS? BH: Because it was the cheapest project!! (Ed: yes we are v good value for money!!) Ed: What has kept you coming back over the years? BH: When I come back, I can see the difference that has been made in a relatively short period of time. I can really see how the bush has been cleared in the areas that I had been working in previous years. And also I like the overall aim of the PAWS project, which is to clear the bush for the cheetah and work towards restoring the original habitat of Namibia. Ed: What are differences you have seen the over the years? BH: PAWS is now working more closely with Africat, doing a lot more work within the cheetah enclosures. Also within the Okonjima reserve itself and the areas I’ve helped clear, you can see the grass coming back and also the difference that makes for the wildlife. There are a lot more animals in the areas that are being opened up, including oryx, eland and impala. This year was the first time that I saw a really large herd of red hartebeest, before I’d only ever seen one or two!! Ed: How do you feel being so involved with PAWS over the past 4 years has influenced your views on conservation? BH: I now realise how key it is for Namibia to educate the next generation in conservation, especially as so much of the animals occur naturally on farm land. Ed: What is one of your favourite memories at PAWS? BH: One of my funniest memories was when Clive got out of the vehicle to test the firmness of the road ahead during the wet season. He almost completely disappeared down an aardvark hole! Ed: And your favourite animal sighting? BH: So many!! One was the first time I saw Mufana, one of the large male leopards on Okonjima reserve. Iit was first time I’d seen a leopard in its natural habitat. And also seeing the cheetah in their natural habitat, they are just so much more relaxed than they when you see them in the zoo. Ed: And finally, will you come back?! BH: I hope so!!! If I could I’d stay on longer now! Each time I say it will be my LAST time, but I seem to find my way back. Thank you Becky! And also a HUGE THANK YOU for all your work and effort over the years in helping PAWS in our work for the cheetah and wildlife on Okonjima Reserve!! We are back in the U.S. and just wanted say “Thank You” for a wonderful visit to Okonjima. Rohan put a program together for the three of us that was really special. We felt like we had a private tour. Couldn’t have asked for more. Arranging for Andi to talk to the vet after dinner helped make this a real unique experience for her. Rohan also let her use the radio tracking equipment on two occasions adding much to this great stay. He also showed us part of Africat. This is something special to me. I wish I could have seen more. Again, many thanks. Tom Ruisinger

Thank you very much for a perfect two-night-stay at Okonjima Main Lodge. We started our trip through Namibia at Okinjima. It was perfect and we recommend everybody to stay more than two nights. Seeing a leopard and tracking the cheetahs by foot was a once-in-a-lifetime-experience. Whenever we'll come to Namibia again we will visit Okonjima - that's for sure!!! Thanks to a great team and the guides - we learned so much.

A party of Expert Africa's travellers recently visited Okonjima Main Camp - Mrs x 2 They arrived on: 27-May-2011 They left on: 28-May-2011 ------------------------------------------ They wrote to us about their stay, saying: Staying at Okonjima for the last night of our trip was special and we regretted not staying longer to enjoy more of the facilities. Our View room was enormous and superbly equipped. Our guide Daniel was excellent on the leopard tracking and we were delighted to see not just a leopard munching on a steenbok, but other game too. The evening meal was of a very high standard and the staff helpful. The camp is 24km / half an hour along a rough track, and you need to time your arrival before the activities start at 15:30 (winter). When asked for their feedback on Okonjima Main Camp, they commented: Location as:Excellent Rooms as:Excellent Service as:Good Food as:Excellent Activities as:Excellent Overall, they voted their stay here as: Excellent

Okonjima is not your regular lodge and tracking cats via radio collars in very large enclosures is a different experience - but a fantastic one! We stayed in Bush Camp, which has lovely, comfortable, open rooms, well spread out. The bird food was a nice touch and attracted a flock of great sightings. Our guide Albert was a top man who really went the distance for us. We tracked leopard, cheetah and scrambled up a bushy escarpment on foot to find hyena. It was really interesting to visit Africat and see its work in action and hear about the increased focus on education. Arriving at our chalet with the sides of the tent removed and warthogs on the lawn was a magical experience. We had the chalet furthest from the restaurant but nearest to the wildlife, which was great. Bird food was provided to attract the smaller inhabitants and we sat for hours soaking up the sun and watching the birds. Trips are expensive, but worth it. We went out on our first night to find leopards. The leopard's collar didn't detract from the experience at all for us and it was almost a hard to find as an uncollared one. The next morning we tracked cheetahs on foot. Our guide Rohan was excellent, although not so popular when he pointed out the frost beside the road - we were cold enough already! The cold was forgotten once we found 4 cheetah having their breakfast (an oryx apparently). We stood watching them for nearly an hour and there was no pressure to leave until we were ready and craving a nice warm breakfast. The food was excellent and sitting around large tables chatting to the other guests was great. We'd have been happy to stay for another week, although we would have liked more jumpers as it was freezing cold. Just perfect - extremely well planned, every amenity you could wish for. Having one side built of canvas, which can be rolled up, is a wonderul innovation. Beautifully sited, you really felt as though you had your own private home in the bush. A highlight was for me was being able to feed the birds. It was really difficult to tear myself away from the chalet to go on the activities! I could have spent the whole day there relaxing and just enjoying the antics of the birds and warthogs. I enjoyed the activities and being able to get a closer view of usually very elusive animals such as leopards and wild dogs. As an added bonus, on the drive back to camp one evening we also saw a wild leopard. He crossed the road right in front of our vehicle and much to our delight, hung around for a minute or two, giving an exceptional sighting. Tiena the receptionist/host was very helpful and really co-ordinated everything extremely well. Thanks to Tiena, throughout the two days everything was very well organised. It is the perfect place at which to end a stay in Namibia. My only regret is not staying for 3 nights. We had Bush View rooms, which were out of this world. Going to sleep to the roar of lions, waking up to a view of oryx and warthogs! The rooms were really nicely decorated. Everything ran like clockwork there, you went to get your dinner, handed in your key, then got it back with a torch later. The food was excellent. Paid for lunch on the first day, which was a little over priced really at $100. The following day we had a late breakfast after going leopard tracking at 6am, so the breakfast then lasted us till we had coffee and cakes at 2.30 before the afternoon activities. The activities were pricey (as there were 5 of us) but equally excellent value for money when yo considered what you got to see. The guides were excellent too (ours Jonas was very enthusiastic and very amusing) When you got back from the night drive or a visit to the night hide, it was lovely to find hot water bottles in your bed! The four of us stayed with you for two nights from 20th - 22nd October. And we so wish we had had longer! Our stay at Okonjima was the climax to a wonderful three weeks' self drive around the beautiful country of Namibia. We had many adventures and met lots of interesting people. But we saw an amazing variety of wildlife, and not the least of those were at Okonjima where Stefan looked after us and made sure we were able to see all that we wanted to see. He was kind and patient and we are very grateful to him for his guidance and knowledge and to Julie and all the staff in the lodge for making our stay so very comfortable. There are likely to be many friends of ours heading in your direction so don't think you have seen the last of 'Letchworth Garden City' people! Many thanks for your hospitality and for the very good work that you do which we will acknowledge separately in a practical way!

From the start to finish our trip to Okonjima was great. The friendliness of the staff at the bush camp to the very knowledgeable guides made this an unbelievable end to our Namibia visit. Tracking and finding the leopards was very special indeed and seeing a leopard at night was an absolute bonus. All staff at Okonjima need to be highly commended for work very well done.

What an amazing experience - I really did think I'd died and gone to heaven here!! For me there aren't enough superlatives for Africat - everything was just perfect. Brilliant accommodation (everything just right - 'natural', well-thought-out luxury), delicious food, lovely posters on walls of cats who actually live there, staff great - particularly our guides, really nice touches, e.g. staff 'drumming' everyone in to dinner, each chalet having supply of seed for feeding birds, torches for finding way back to chalets. We'd spent quite a lot of time enjoying ourselves at Lake Otjikoto and Tsumeb on our way to Okonjima so we thought we'd probably arrive there too late for the first afternoon drive. But we rang Africat just to let them know to expect us that evening and when we did arrive our nice guide (and lovely German family who made up the rest of our group) had kindly waited for us. No sooner had we parked our car (and signed the accident indemnity form and had a welcome drink!) than we were off in the back of the truck to spot leopards - as you do! All of our drives/walks were successful as regards the animals we encountered - 3 leopards, more cheetah than I can remember (particularly two who posed beautifully for ages on top of a mound in the early morning sunshine), hyena, hunting dogs and porcupine (who make far more noise than I would ever have imagined as they rattle their quills to push each other out of the way to get at food). We were incredibly lucky, though, to be at Okonjima during a visit from the vet to do routine dental checks and treatment on some of the cats - we saw (and stroked!) a leopard and later a lion on the operating table at the clinic there. Hope we didn't get in the vet's way too much. The daily 'routine' at Okonjima seems to be early wake-up call at 5.30am (!) for light breakfast (cereal/cake/juice/coffee) then out animal tracking by 6.45am. After successful cat-spotting thanks to our brilliant guide - a really friendly, enthusiastic, humorous and knowledgeable young man called Rohan - we returned to camp at about 9.30-10.00am for delicious brunch and then about 4 hours free to relax as you wish - snoozing, dipping in the pool, sunbathing, feeding the birds, etc. Coffee and cake at about 3.00pm before going off on another drive for more animal tracking followed by sundowners in good company looking out over the Okonjima estate - bliss! The lovely dinner was at 7pm with an optional night drive (to see porcupine, honey badgers) for those with any energy left. Africat definitely lived up to my expectations and provided the highlight of an already amazing trip around Namibia. We shall have to start doing the Lottery so we can try and go back one day! Party BELL x4

Our Okonjima guide, Albert, was outstanding – really friendly, knowledgeable, enthusiastic and up for the challenge of finding the 4 Wild Dogs in the huge park for our 3rd activity...which he and the tracker, Zachaeus, managed just at dusk – after driving miles. On the first activity at Okonjima we tried and failed to track a leopard with 2 cubs, so then returned to the spot where a leopard had been seen with a kill. He was still there guarding his large ‘warthog dinner’, which he had dragged up a tree! While we were watching him, a young, hungry, hopeful female appeared. She wandered off when it was obvious she wasn’t going to get a bite of warthog. On our way back at dusk we came across her nonchalantly wandering along a track! Fabulous! Tracking 2 different groups of cheetah on foot was remarkable. The 2nd group of 3 cheetahs were sharing a small steenbok. We would never have seen this group without the tracking facility and we would not have been able to be so close to unhabituated cheetah. We were so close we could hear them purring! The stay at Okonjima was very comfortable and welcoming. The food was great and plentiful. We loved the provision of your own birdseed supply in the tin outside the chalet. Clearly the birds expected us to realise it was there sooner than we did, as they were congregating for the distribution as soon as we took up occupancy!

Dear Sirs and Madams, I would like to say our honest thanks to your hospitality. We conducted our first journey to Africa this year. After arriving and having a one-night-stay in Windhoek we travelled to Okonjima, the first stage on our three weeks journey through Namibia and Botsuana. And what should we say? Okonjima was almost perfect. We were overwhelmed by a perfect organised service, a very well trained staff, very customer friendly guides, perfect accommodations and a tasteful cuisine. But the very big disadvantage was, that we only have a two-night stay in Okonjima. So, you raised the bar for all other booked lodges on a very high level. Unfortunately, not one single lodge was able to make us so happy as you were able to do so! In the end I want to mention the receptionist June Rittmann. Our compliments to her. We have never seen a such courteous and service orientated person like her! We really felt at ease with her. Many thanks in advance. So, because of being fascinated of your lodge, of the Namibian people, of the environment, we started to plan our next trip to you next year. Hope to see you all again Yours faithfully Thorsten Hackenbroich & Katja Cornelius

Dear Mr. Boehme, It has been a real pleasure to meet you last 6th June in your office and to have a full explanation of your Foundation. It has been a fantastic and unique experience to go round in your reserve with your excellent guides (Stephan, Daniel & Dani) to look for the leopards and the cheetahs I appreciated very much the program of your Foundation and I believe that your initiative really deserves much more support and help from anybody. As I anticipated, when in your office, I would like to send you a small contribution, I would like also you list my address for your Newsletter and keep me posted on any other activities or initiatives concerning your Foundation and the survival of leopards and cheetahs. To the whole team, I don't really know where to start! Thank you all sooooooo much for making our dream wedding come true! The 29th May really was all we had dreamed of and so much more. Everyones hospitality was fantastic and helped so much in the smooth running of everything - if there were any last minute panics we had no idea! The attention to detail was phenomenal from the porcupine quills in my bouquet and the bottles in the tree, to the flower petals on the aisle and the table decorations at dinner. The photographs with the obliging giraffe were also a high point! Everything was just so perfect that we couldn't possible list everything as that would mean writing about every minute of our stay with you! Of course, we mustn't forget not only your generosity in upgrading us to bush camp but to the incredibly fantastic bush suite for our wedding night! That was an incredible surprise and truly fantastic! Just writing this email & thinking of the best day of our lives - a dream come true - is bringing a huge smile to our faces! Thank you all so much for your warm hospitality and incredible generosity. We wish you all the best in the future and we hope to be back very soon! Florence & Wayne Earle

Mrs Alison Pascoe

A party of Expert Africa's travellers recently visited Okonjima Main Camp - Mrs Alison Pascoe x 2. They arrived on: 27-May-2011 They left on: 28-May-2011. They wrote to us about their stay, saying: Staying at Okonjima for the last night of our trip was special and we regretted not staying longer to enjoy more of the facilities.

Visit of Steffi Henschel of Cruising Reisen: Hi Donna and Tristan, just had a chat with Steffi, who visited Okonjima & AfriCat recently. She will still send us her experiences and comments about the visit in writing. Just wanted to let you know about this before: "ein konstruktiver Vorschlag einen Gastes für Okonjima war: es sollte eine Selbsthilfegruppe eingerichet werden mit dem Motto: "Hilfe - ich möchte nicht nach Hause - was soll ich tun" ;)" While she was there, one guest suggested that Okonjima should start a "psycho"-group "HELP - I DON'T WANT TO GO HOME - WHAT CAN I DO?" Isn't that sweet and proving how guests love Okonjima & AfriCat? Would be making another great fun page on Facebook... Carola

A party of Expert Africa's travellers recently visited Okonjima Main Camp - Miss Elizabeth Haynes x 2 They arrived on: 12-Apr-2011 They left on: 14-Apr-2011 ------------------------------ They wrote to us about their stay, saying: We had a Bush view room. This had a great view of the bush (and lightening storms) behind main camp with various antelope and small animals all making an appearance, The room itself had a huge window to make the most of the view and was very comfortably and stylishly appointed. This was our favourite accomodation! The activities offered by Okonjima - especially the Leopard and Cheetah tracking - were awesome and it was amazing being able to see these beautiful cats at such close range. The staff were really flexible on the activities offered - we did the leopard tracking twice. We also discovered that the managment know their first aid - following an encounter with wasps halting the hyena tracking. The staff were great and gave us a complimentary bottle of fizz on our first night for our honeymoon. When asked for their feedback on Okonjima Main Camp, they commented: Location as:Excellent Rooms as:Excellent Service as:Excellent Food as:Excellent Activities as:Excellent Facilities as:Excellent Overall, they voted their stay here as: Excellent

TRIP ADVISOR:(submitted by Okonjima) tuckytuk... Köln 6 reviews “VERY nice lodge with excellent service” Date of review: May 1, 2011 We stayed 2 nights in the Okonjima Bushcamp, not cheap but worth the money. Houses are large and very nicely made with a breathtaking view. The gamedrive was the best we had in Namibia, seeing Leopards and Cheetas. All very wery friendly and offered every service. Just a great lodge and very well located as laast lodge before driving back to Windhoek. Stay 2 nights minimum to be able to make all gamedrives.

BBC Wildlife Magazine June 2011 - CARING FOR CHEETAHS I have just returned from working on the most wonderful conservation project in Namibia. PAWS (People and Wildlife Solutions) is the volunteer 'arm' of AfriCat, which was seen last year on TV's Cheetah Kingdom. Anyone looking for a professionally run, exciting project to work on could not find better. Not only did we help to improve the environment for the cheetahs, we even had hands-on experience with the cats and game drives every afternoon. We also helped out at another project, run by the Rare and Endangered Species Trust, which is doing sterling work to protect the disappearing vulture population. Wright Family

Our clients Mr and Mrs Wright have just returned from their trip and have sent through the following feedback: Okonjima was the perfect place to start. The cheetah and leopard tracking was fascinating and not at all as easy as we'd imagined. Nigel, the guide, was a delightful character, academic and puckish if that's possible. There was a lovely surprise at supper on our second night as it was John's birthday and a bottle of champagne was on our table and a birthday cake was carried in at the end of the meal. We were so lucky at Okonjima in that we had such congenial company at supper Many thanks for looking after our guests so well and thanks for recognising Johns birthday With kind regards Josie (Safari Consultants)

Dr ROB LEWIS

Dear Luigi, I wanted to write and thank-you for your help and hospitality. We had a really wonderful two nights at the campground at Okonjimi, and a great experience with all of the staff there, from Elaine's scheduling, to June's welcome, to Daniel's guiding. I am sure it has been a challenging year with all the rains and the camp's private road systems, fences, and electicity grid. Africat has an admirable goal and it was a real pleasure to see the number of passionate people you've recruited to make it a reality. Thanks again for the opportunity. We will recommend it to our friends. Stay well, Rob Lewis

We were lucky enough to spend some time with you this April 11 and would like to say how wonderful Okonjima is and the incredible work that you are doing also at Africat. The highlight of my visit was spending time with your Painted Dogs that are truly wonderful and I would urge you to give as much profile to these animals as you do with your cheetahs and leopards. A memorable experience quad biking to see the dogs and the enthusiasm they showed on meeting me a new friend. I will remember our visit for a long time and hope to come back and see you again soon.

My favourite part of the trip was Okonjima. I loved it there. I got the room I requested and it is such a wonderful place. The meals were great, the lodge is very trendy and has nice decor and the room was so great. I can't believe the view looking out that massive window. I even had my own resident Oryx sleeping outside. The staff were really great (especially Nigel the guide) and I saw 2 leopards (one was eating her kill in a tree) and 7 cheetahs. They really do a wonderful job with carnivores there and it's great they have so much land for them to run around on. I was very sad to leave there yesterday. It was such a great relaxing end to an almost exhausting 'holiday' - working 3 weeks of it and getting up at 5.30am or 7am everyday! This place really exceeded my expectations (which is sometimes hard to do!!) and I would recommend it to anyone that loves animals and wants to relax at the same time. It was very quiet there - not many guests - but that made it more peaceful - except the thunder and lightening every night!!

I visited Okonjima in 2008 and it was the most wonderful experience of my life. To see those wonderful cheetahs at such close range was for me the highlight of the stay. I have been watching Cheetah Kingdom on the television and was delighted to see TJ the leopard who I was lucky enough to see during my visit. It was also a surprise to see Jacque who had spotted TJ and was instrumental in tracking him down for his vaccinations and it was Jacque who tracked him down for my group to see during my visit. Keep up your magnificent work Africat because without people like you doing what you do for these wonderful animals this very sad world will lose them.

Hello Okonjima ! First of all I do apologize for my "poor" english. (I am french + african wildlife / particulary cats "fanatic" ) Yesterday I have watched a program on tv about african wildlife - as nearly the only programs I am watching ! - and it was about your foundation Africat. It was very interesting, so that today I have looked for your website and found it. There are a lot of reason for me to keep it in my favorite : - many interesting things to read - quite a large choice of place / accomodations - french version !!! - very beautifull cat photos, ..... which is not unique, but what is so is .... the hight definition / large size !!! many thanks for this !!! We ( my wife & I ) have been to Africa twice ( Zimbabwe 2005/2007 & Botswana 2007 ) and our biggest wish / dream is to come again but unfortunatly we can't afford for it actually :-( , but .... I keep your "name/ adress" etc .... may be the next time it will be Okonjima ;-) This is what I wanted to tell you to thank and congratulate for what you are doing for the cats. Kind regards Michel / Tours - France P.S. and thanks again for your photos : I've now beautifull wall papers and screen saver ;-)

Hi Ben, I hope you are well. I am unsure if you remember that you put me in touch with Roma at PAWS, Okonjima last year and I arranged a two week volunteer stay there for the August/September just gone. I have been back a few weeks now, but wanted to write and say thanks for helping me organise it. It was the best experience I've had and the stay did 'everything it said on the tin'. It was hard work, but the rewards were amazing and I have too many photos to count to prove it! If anyone else in the industry asks you about PAWS then I would definitely recommend it and want to go back some day. Thanks again for helping me organise it. The brand new series following the work of the AfriCat Foundation and in particular the largest cheetah release programme attempted in Namibia, started last Friday. If you missed it, don't despair. You catch up with the work of the AfriCat team as they prepare for the release of the first six cheetah into the new Reserve, on ITV Player. In this episode, the team battle with the heat as the cats receive their medical checks - will they all make it as far as the release? Image: © ITV Studios Limited 2010

Hi Donna, Tristan, Carla, Dave and Wayne Just a quickie to let you know that the programme on Friday night was fantastic and I can't wait to see the rest of the series. You all came across so well on camera - you are obviously real professionals in front of the camera .... even Wayne!!! It was very well filmed and the only problem was that on Friday night it was the end of a series of "Big Brother" which is never coming back and has been running for 10 years. So that programme started at 7.30 in the evening on a different channel and went on until almost midnight - it had a lot of coverage even making it onto the 10 pm News!!! So if people missed the first in the series, I am sure they will get the rest of it. Well done! I hope you have had lots of positive feedback because it was brilliant! It really made me want to get back to Namibia soon. Hope to see you all soon. love Sheena

We had a great stay in Bush Camp. Now, back again in Germany, we miss the Team. The activities are very good and informative, the guides know everything and are able to answer all you need to know. The bungalows in Bush Camp are very good and all are friendly. We stay for one night in Main Camp and realized, that the atmosphere there is not so good than in Bush Camp, the bungalows are small and dark but very clean. We would recommend more the Bush Camp and think, that 2 nights minimum are to stay there to be informated intensively about the AfriCat, the animals a.s.o. while enjoying the good service and familiar atmosphere. Very good range of activities. Greatings from Germany to the Team (Dean, Frans and the others...), Susanne und Sascha

Upon my recent visit to Namibia, starting at Okonjima, I heard about a guest who stayed there for a month. Now I know why. It's the best wildlife shots I've got, and the most rewarding early wake-up call as well! It will give You a good feeling to learn in what fair way the big cats are being treated. I hope to be back, for a long time.

I would like to visit Okonjima during our next holiday, as we just received the nice photograph of "Measles" which we adopteted now for one year. It must be a very hard, but also very interesting work to help the big "cats" to survive, and I could imagine to do that too, if I would live in Namibia. But unfortunately I have to live in cold Germany, but I help in our animal protecting found. here in the area and have also here at home around 15 cats, but only usual cats. I love all cats. Also the camps of Okonjima seems to be beautiful and it must be a good feeling to spend a night there (we usually sleep in a tent, but not always.) I love to be in the nature and that's the reason that I also love to spend the nights in a tent. Maybe we'll come to your place. I'm not sure whether you will close during December/January ? Best regards Carola Ulfers

Enjoyed our stay in April 1999 - welcome fanastic - the night noises overlayed by a 'Snoring lion' or so said our guide Hendrick. To come back from the evening view of the porcupines and see a caracal waiting outside our door almost as if to make sure we arrived safely - and so to bed.
