Okonjima Yearly Game Count October 2010

Every year during the hottest and driest time of the year – which is usually OCTOBER month, and during the FULL MOON cycle - Okonjima takes stock!

This year for the first time – we included the NEW 16 000ha Reserve.

The busiest waterhole is definitely “Northdam” which you often hear about in the Okonjima news updates for the cats love this far north section of the park. More than 1 200 animals drank at this waterhole over a period of 72 hours, followed by “Damlise” and then “Marathondam” which is also home to the Reinecke-Codling family.

The 4 000ha reserve has got about 1300 animals within the park. Here the majority antelope being kudu and then Oryx. This reserve is more mountainous which makes for ideal kudu habitat.

The 16 000ha reserve has about 4000 animals drinking on a daily basis – so you can imagine HOW MUCH WATER is consumed by all and how much water Okonjima has to pump daily to ‘quenchen’ everyone’s thirst which also includes staff and guests. . . All this water is between 120m and 150m below the surface.

The dominant antelope specie is Oryx followed by Kudu and then Eland.

It’s very dry at the moment BUT the rains have JUST arrived! It started on 15 Nov and its still wet - Let’s hold thumbs the rains stay for a while, for the Impala are waiting to drop their calves.
